Today (Oct 7) is World Habitat Day. Since 1986, In Every Year the first Monday in October has been declared World Habitat Day. In 1985, the United Nations Human Settlement Commission, which met in Kingston in Jamaica (An island in the West Indies) announced the Annual World Habitat Day.
Prime Minister Ranasinghe Premadasa, who was attending the conference, led his Sri Lankan delegation and first presented the idea of a World Habitat Day to the United Nations Human Settlement Programme. The year 1987 was declared as the International Year of Housing, in advance of a proposal made by the late Ranasinghe Premadasa to the UN.
The theme of this year’s World Habitat Day is “Frontier Technologies as an innovative tool to transform waste to wealth” – මෙවර ලෝක ජනාවාස දින තේමාව : “නවීන තාක්ෂණ ශිල්ප ක්රම නව ප්රවේශයක් කර ගනිමින් අපද්රව්ය ධනයක් කර ගනිමු.”
